Jiu-Jitsu began with Esai Mitsuyo Maeda Koma, a Japanese Jiu-Jitsu master and member of the Kodokan. Maeda emigrated to Brazil in the 1910s where an influential businessman named Gastão Gracie helped him get established. In return for his aid, Maeda taught the fighting art to Gastão's son Carlos Gracie, who then taught the art to his brothers and sons. When Maeda taught the art to the Gracies he called it Jiu-jitsu. The Gracie family refined this art form into what is now known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu differs from other martial arts in that it provides solutions for all possible stages of combat. Other disciplines like Tae Kwon Do or Karate focus on striking while standing up, and rely on a person's strength and speed to deliver damage, but speed and strength doesn't matter when you're on your back. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu differs from other martial arts fundamentally. While other martial arts rely heavily on strength and speed, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu relies on superior technique and leverage.
That will depend on what you are looking for in an instructor or club. Do you want to train with an instructor teaching BJJ with a Karate or Tae kwon Do Black Belt or would you rather learn BJJ from two Gracie Barra BJJ Black Belts with years of BJJ training, teaching, and competition experience?
I suggest you look into their “BJJ Belt” background, years of BJJ training,
if they hand out receipts, their BJJ competition record and compare them to ours and make your decision on what’s best for you.
Better yet, come meet us and check out the training facility!
If you are serious about your BJJ training then the choice is simple.
Absolutely! Gracie Barra Shuswap/Vernon are proud owners of both their locations, so you can be assured that we will not “jump around” from location to location.
Yes, we have the best training schedule around! Click on our GB Shuswap and GB Vernon schedule sections and you will see that there are ample opportunities to train. Also, we are constantly adding new classes and times to the current schedule so that anyone can make training part of their daily lifestyle!
I've been to clubs that don't wash their mats
and I'm worried about infections, do you clean your mats?
Yes we make sure that our mats are always
bleached and clean! Unlike some clubs, cleanliness is a must for
every one of our locations!
Yes. Our main objective is to cater to the public who have the desire to train and compete in BJJ, and train MMA, but not to compete in MMA. However, we do have some students who want that experience and do compete in MMA – we will work with that student to prepare them for it. At our clubs we will not allow a member to compete in MMA unless they have at least a BJJ Blue Belt and a year in Stand-up training, and are committed to putting in a lot of time to prepare.
The belts in order are: White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black. Often schools award four stripes for White through Brown belts. Black Belts are typically awarded one stripe every three years up to ten stripes.
A Gi (sometimes referred to as a Kimono) is a thick uniform that is typically worn when training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Do you have any women training BJJ?
Yes! We have
at least 10 women (White, Blue, Purple and Brown belts) for women to train with!
Do I have to Grapple
with Women?
No. You Grapple with who
ever you choose and vice versa...both men and women have lots of
training partners to choose from!
Unlike other martial arts where you can get a "Black Belt"
before you are even a teenager, typically it takes anywhere from 8 to 15 years to attain the rank of Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Practically anyone can utilize the techniques created by Carlos Gracie. Carlos Gracie, when he created his revolutionary system, weighed no more than 135 lbs. The core principle of Gracie Jiu-jitsu is to provide a method for smaller, weaker individuals to protect themselves from bigger, stronger attackers.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can provide you with far more extensive results than typical aerobic exercise. The resistance encountered while rolling provides you with a good base to improve your core strength through intense abdominal workout, increase your muscle tone, and reduce you body fat while improving your balance, bodily coordination, cardio vascular capacity, and muscular endurance.
Wear shorts and a T-shirt and we will provide you a demo Gi to wear over them.
We begin class with some light callisthenics and stretching. Following our warm-up we then begin drilling technique (review known skills and learn new ones, and practice them). These drills, when done over and over, help form muscle memory and help our students retain technique. After our drilling is completed then we begin to spar (or roll). Rolling is when students are able to put their techniques to the test with training partners who can resist and counter just as they would in a competition, or in an actual self-defence situation, providing valuable real-world experience should the techniques ever need to be applied.
No. Although competition (no matter what the results) will enhance your BJJ skills, it is not a requirement for students, but rather up to the individual.
No. We have ample parking for everyone at all locations.
There are NO
belt "tests" or insane "$250 fees" for promotions. We feel
that belt test and fees take away from the promotion itself
as some may say belt testing fees is just a "cash grab". With that said, at both GB clubs the only requirement for getting promoted is to come and train, learn and have fun!
